Ezo Momonga, or the Japanese flying squirrel, is a squirrel that will not leave anyone indifferent. This funny animal causes tenderness from the first seconds. This cute creature lives in only one place - in Japan on the island of Hokkaido.
Residents of this island, considering the animal a local landmark, placed his portrait on regional railway tickets. Momongs inhabit mountain island forests, where they can climb on coniferous trees.
The Japanese flying squirrel resembles an ordinary miniature squirrel. But it has several significant differences from the animal we know well. The most significant of which is the presence of leathery membranes between the front and hind legs. With this fixture, Momonga plans from tree to tree. Such a “parachute” helps the squirrel to quickly overcome distances up to 150 meters.
A rodent the size of a human palm (from 10 to 25 cm) weighs not more than 200 grams, but is endowed with a surprisingly attractive appearance. The main distinguishing feature and decoration of the squirrel is considered to be brilliant convex eyes.
Thanks to the silvery-gray color, the little flying squirrel can hide from its enemies. These cute creatures are nocturnal, so they are almost impossible to meet during the day.
The Japanese flying squirrel are good to keep as a pet. It calmly gets along with other animals and quickly becomes attached to the owner. The most important thing the squirrel needs is a large space to make jumps.
In nature, Japanese flying squirrels live a little — about 5 years. At home, their life expectancy is much longer - up to 9-13 years.
