How to communicate with a strange dog?

Recently, there are more and more places where people can come with pets. We can meet four-legged friends not only on the streets or in the parks, but also in cafes, shops and even dog-friendly offices.

In this article, we give you below few tips which will help in greeting any dog convenient and enjoyable for everyone.

1. Ask for permission from the owner

Even if it seems to you that the dog is friendly and not against communication you should get the approval of the owner. Only after permission, you can approach the dog. If the owner denies, you should respect that decision as there can be a number of reasons why he does not allow his dog to be approached. For example, a dog may be afraid or sick.

2. Wait for the dog to approach

It is better to approach an unfamiliar dog slowly, or stop and wait for the dog to approach you. If you meet this dog for the first time, give him some time to get used to your face. You can squat down at a distance of several meters from the animal in order to be on the same level with him.

3. Avoid eye contact

In humans, eye contact is considered a sign of friendliness and confidence, but in dogs it is not so. If you make eye-contact with a dog for a long time, then the dog can take it as a sign of aggression and threat.

4. Never insist

As soon as the dog allows you to touch and play with him, try to be as gentle as possible and do not touch the top of his head. Do not forget that it is the dog who decides how long you can play with him. If the dog starts to move away from you, do not try to follow him, this may cause him irritation.

5. Be confident

Dogs can easily feel emotions. If you are feeling scared the dog will know and it can make him cautious. So try to be as confident as possible and smile. This way you can assure the dog that he has nothing to worry about.
