Which lizard is the best at scaring?

There are few animals can compare in this case with the frilled lizard! The fearless little reptile challenges any threat in its territory with a tremendous display of aggressive hissing and intimidation.

Such flawless is its intimidation technique that is often misunderstood as a highly dangerous animal.

When threatened, the reptile unfurls its skin fold on the neck, opens its mouth wide, and hisses aggressively. The unique frill around its neck is made up of spikes made from cartilage. The spikes are connected to the jawbone of the frilled neck. To widen the frill, it opens the jaw and raises the spikes that support the skin flap around the neck. The frill can be up to 20-25 cm in diameter when unfolded. Such a “collar” can be red, yellow or orange in colour.

Actually, that the little hissing dragon is anything but dangerous. The entire display of aggression is just a bluff, used to stun the enemy.

Frilled lizards are mainly found in Northern Australia and on the island of New Guinea. This is the second largest lizard of the Agamidae family. They grow up to 90 cm long, most of which is made up of the long tail.

Lizards prefer to spend most of their time on trees where they manage to hide well. They only come down to the ground in search of food. These reptiles are omnivores and will eat anything they can. However, they prefer to feed on insects, spiders, and other invertebrates and will sometimes also eat other lizards and small mammals.

Frilled lizard makes a good pet. It needs a large space terrarium with high-quality lighting. These species are quickly tamed and soon they stop getting angry and open their “collar”.
