Giant squids are not an invention of writers and movie directors. The Kraken squid really exists. Scientifically, this genus of huge oceanic squid is called Architeuthis.
Architeuthis squid can be impressive sizes, up to 18 meters long and weight up to 750 kg. The tentacles can grow up to 5-6 meters.
These huge creatures live in the subtropical and temperate zones of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans. Giant squid prefer to dwell in the depths of 200 to 1000 meters and rarely rise to the surface. They not often meet with humans and it usually happens by chance. That is why it is not easy for scientist to study their behavior and lifestyle.
This giant has practically no natural enemy. Only a sperm whale can dare to attack such a monster, since he is larger and faster than a clumsy squid. Often terrible battles are fought between squid and sperm whale. But in most battles, Architeutis loses to his opponent.
Despite frightening appearance, giant squids are not dangerous to humans. They eat fish, shrimps and other deep-sea animals that inhabit at great depths. Architeuthis has practically no muscles, so these squids are not adapted for active hunting and fast swimming. They prefer to hide somewhere in order to attack the victim unexpectedly. However, like other squid species, Architeuthis can use their tentacles and beak to defend or attack potential predators.
