Jumping "tomato"

It's not a vegetable that grows in the garden, but it’s a funny Madagascar frog.

Tomato frog or tomato narrowmouth is an amusing amphibian. This bright representative of the frogs adorns the Madagascar rainforests with its presence. Looking at this cute animals, it becomes clear why they have got such unusual "vegetable" name.

Tomato frog is not only red colour, but also yellow, brown, orange. The belly of a tomato frog is an off-white color and they have a long black line that runs from their eyes, down their sides, to their back legs. There may be black spots present on the back and rear legs. Females tend to be larger and brighter than males. They grow up to 10 cm, males — 6.5 cm.

Their bright colour not only for attracting the opposite sex frogs, but also to scare away predators. During the evolution, tomato frogs have adapted well. They don’t belong to poisonous species. But they "disguises themselves" well under their dangerous brothers.

And yet, this frog has an interesting feature: in a stressful situation, the “tomato” skin can release a toxic secretion that sticks together the mouth of a predator attacking it.  For people handling the frog without gloves will cause an allergy or skin irritation.  In addition, in case of danger, the "tomato" can swell to appear larger.

The frog itself hunts in a rather unusual way.  It burrows into the ground, jumps out of the ambush and attacks the victim.

"Tomatoes" don’t worry about food. They are omnivorous and feed on a variety of insects and worms that they can easily catch.

These frogs can be pretty cool pets! Remember to wear gloves when handling your animal.
