Flying with a Dog or Cat: How to Prepare

Flying with a pet always requires preparation. With proper planning, you can take your cat or dog almost anywhere. You should take care of the comfort and safety of your pet in advance. These tips for traveling with pets can help ease stress for all involved.

1. Visit your veterinarian. Be sure to visit a veterinarian before traveling. He will check your pet's health, make sure all vaccinations are up to date, and give recommendations on how to prepare for the flight.

2. Do your research on flight requirements and regulations. Each airline has different requirements for traveling with pets. Depending your cat’s or dog’s weight, your pet may be required to travel in the cargo hold. This determines which carrier your friend will travel in. Make sure you read these rules and understand what documents and crate are required to transport your pet.

3. Carrier for transportation. Purchase a suitable container to travel your animal. It must be strong enough, spacious and meet the airline's requirements. Make sure the crate has enough room for your pet to turn around and change position during the flight.

Indicate the information about your pet on the crate — its name, your name and contact information. This will help identify and contact you if necessary.

5. Prepare your pet. If your dog or cat is not used to being in a carrier, take the time to help them feel more comfortable in it. Gradually get your pet used to being carried in a carrier several weeks before the flight. Give him the opportunity to explore a new thing by placing his favorite toys or his blanket inside for comfort. Also, try taking short trips in the car with your pet in transport so that he gets used to such movements.

6. Prepare documents. Before departure, make sure that you have all the necessary documents to transport your pet. This may include the pet's passport, vaccination certificates, travel permits and other documents that the airline or country you are flying to may require.

7. Feeding and care. Feed your pet a couple of hours before your flight. To avoid stomach problems, it is better not to feed your pet immediately before the flight. Also make sure you can provide your pet with access to water during the trip.

Bringing your beloved pet along on a family vacation, particularly one involving air travel, can definitely add work to your preparations. But by planning ahead, flying with your dog or cat can be a pleasant and enjoyable experience for the whole family.
