Having friends over and showing off a massive aquarium with a few pet sharks inside may look cool and impressive. But let's find out, is it a good idea?
Keeping a shark in your home aquarium is a very difficult undertaking and is generally not recommended. Sharks are large and very active predators that require enormous space, special conditions and specialized equipment.
Here are a few reasons why keeping such an exotic animal at home is a bad idea:
1. Size and space requirements
Most species of sharks are of impressive size and require a huge amount of space to swim freely. The aquarium for keeping sharks must be at least 3 times the size of an adult shark, and its width must be at least 2 times the length of the predator.
A narrow or insufficient aquarium space can be burdensome for the shark and lead to stress and illness.
2. Feeding needs
Sharks are predators and require regular and appropriate feeding. Feeding sharks can be a complex and expensive process, as they need to be offered large marine animals to provide them with the right nutrition.
3. Security
Sharks pose a potential danger to people. Their sharp teeth, strong tails and predatory instincts make these animals unpredictable and potentially dangerous to humans and other pets in the home.
4. Environmental reasons
Often, purchasing and keeping sharks at home contributes to illegal trade and threats to shark populations and their natural habitats.
Of the approximately 500 species of sharks, only a few can be kept in home aquariums. In addition, only a few species of sharks can live in captivity, and most of them die soon after being introduced into the aquarium.
Considering all the above factors, we recommend leaving sharks in their natural habitat in the oceans and seas. There are many other interesting and suitable species of fish and marine life that can be successfully kept in home aquariums.
