How to stop a puppy from chewing everything in sight?

It’s easy to get upset when a puppy chews up your expensive Italian shoe or gnaws on the legs of your furniture — especially when he’s seemingly ignoring all the toys you’ve bought him. But don't be angry or discouraged. A chewing puppy is completely normal, and, although it can drive you crazy, this behavior is simple to fix. There are several strategies that can be applied for this:

Choose the right dog toys

Provide your puppy with a variety of chew toys. Fun and attractive toys made especially for puppies will help satisfy their chewing needs and strengthen their teeth and gums.

Apply positive reinforcement

When your puppy chews on the right intended item (such as a toy), reward him. Use words of praise, touching, or even treats to reinforce the desired behavior. This will help your puppy associate chewing on toys with a pleasurable experience.

Never use punishment tactics

Do not punish or use physical force against the puppy. Punishment only makes things worse in the long run, sets training back, and leads to a break in the human-animal bond. This might cause negative emotions and bring the little prankster to panic and fear. Instead of scolding your puppy, focus on the desired behavior and reward it.

Use the replacement method

If your puppy starts chewing of unwanted items, direct his attention to the right toy or suggest an alternative. Help him recognize that there are things that can and should be chewed, and provide alternatives to meet his chewing needs.

Create a safe environment

The puppy is more likely to gnaw on things if he can easily get them. Therefore, remove all valuable or dangerous items where he cannot get them. Gradually, as the puppy grows and gets smarter, you can give him more freedom in accessing objects.

Keep patience

Remember, it takes time to develop the right habit. Be patient in your approach. Repeat positive reinforcement and offer your puppy the right items to chew on. Over time, he will understand the difference between "yes" and "no" and will choose the right objects for the game.
