Desert Lynx

History of occurrence

The Bobcat is the foundation cat for the Desert Lynx breed. The first and subsequent generations derived from the breeding of a Bobcat to a IDLCA acceptable domestic cat is recognized as a domestic Desert Lynx cat. IDLCA recognizes the following breeds as acceptable out crosses to the Bobcat: Maine Coon, Manx, American Bobtail, American Lynx, or Pixie-Bob. Third, fourth and subsequent generations can only be bred to a registered Desert Lynx. The International Progressive Cat Breeders Alliance 'IPCBA' was the first international all-breed registry to recognize the Desert Lynx for registration. IPCBA was also the first international all-breed registry to recognize the Desert Lynx as an established domestic breed, making the breed eligible for Championship competition. The International Desert Lynx Cat Association( IDLCA) has total control of the Desert Lynx breed in IPCBA.

General form

Feral bobcats, Lynx rufus, inhabit most of North America, from as far south as the Florida Everglades and northern Mexico north into Canada. The bobcat is somewhat larger than domestic cat breeds. It is a powerful animal with long legs and a muscular body and is noted for its short tail.  While the Desert Lynx today is a completely domstic cat, it is bred to resemble the bobcat.  Through generations of selective breeding with different breeds of domestic cats, the breed has incorporated many characteristics similar to those of the bobcat. Desert Lynx are medium in length with longer hind legs, and toes may be tufted. They are very alert, intelligent cats.  Males are larger than females and slower to mature. These cats come in both long and short hair.

Character

They are very alert, intelligent cats. Do not expect Desert Lynx to just sit around your house all day. They are active cats, abut they are not curtain climbers, as are some of the more active domestic breeds. They are usually not very vocal. They get along well with dogs and they have adjusted well into households with ferretts, birds, rabbits, and assorted reptiles. They also get along well with children.

Maintenance care

These cats are easy to care for and require less grooming than some breeds. A good brushing every other week, should keep him/her in good condition. This kind of handling keeps you in touch with small issues of your cats skin and coat health that you might not otherwise be aware of as well as giving you extra bonding time. Start young to create an enjoyment of this contact in your cat. Ears: Be aware that Desert Lynx tend to form heavier ear wax build-up than most cats. This excess is often mistaken for ear mites (which would be accompanied by a bad odor and dirty looking ears all over). Though you cat will dislike this kind of grooming, you must regularly clean down as far as you can see with your finger and a piece of a paper towel. If necessary purchase ear cleaner from your vet. Claws: Trimming your cats nail should be started at a young age and performed regularly. This protects your furniture and your skin, as well as the possible loss of a toenail when snagged in the carpet or such.
