Just recently, German researchers discovered a new species of frog in the Amazon, which they called the “zombie frog.” With the help of an international team, scientists discovered that these frogs belong to the genus Synapturanus and spend most of their lives underground. Due to their fear of going outside and their creepy appearance, these frogs got their unusual name - “zombies”.

A team of scientists literally dug frogs out of the mud during the rain. These amphibians live all over the world, hiding underground for the necessity of keeping their skins moist. Only during the heavy rainy season do the "zombie frogs" come to the surface, as the water allows them to remain wet enough to survive.

These frogs are usually nocturnal and fossorial, which means they have a great capacity to burrow, preferring subterranean environments. 

"Zombies" are quite small amphibians. The adult specimen is barely 40 millimeters in length and has a rounded body. In addition, the frog has protruding eyes, with an elongated nose ending, which gives it a peculiar-looking face. 

Because these frogs are very difficult to find, scientists still a lack of information about zombie frogs, their population status is completely unknown. However, the habitat in which they develop is one of the habitats that has suffered most from deforestation in recent years. Thanks to the fact that these organisms live in areas where access is difficult, they’re well protected and have been able to survive.
