Why Do Dogs Hate Walking in the Rain?

On dry days, your pet happily runs outdoors to walk, to play or to do its own business. However, it's a different story when it starts raining. Your dog refuses to even stick his nose out the door.

Interestingly, an aversion to rain is relatively common in many dogs. So why is this?

Wet and cold

Some dogs hate getting wet, whether it's walking in the rain, bathing, swimming, or even just walking through wet grass. Rain-wet fur can cause itching and discomfort, which most animals try to avoid.

Sound of rain

Dogs have excellent hearing. They hear several times better than humans. Therefore, the sound of raindrops can be an unusual and frightening noise for some dogs. In such conditions they feel insecure and anxious.

Increased smells

Due to moisture, all odors become more active than usual and their abundance literally bursts into the dog’s nose. This disorients the pet and confuses it.

Less accessible environment

When it rains, parks and other outdoor areas can become muddy or slippery. This makes walking difficult for dogs, especially if they are not used to such conditions.

How to help your dog enjoy walking in the rain?

* Use rain protection. Buy a special raincoat for your dog to protect him from getting wet. This will help reduce discomfort and keep your dog dry.

* Create positive associations. Teach your dog positive associations with rain. Reward him with treats and rewards while walking in the rain so he will begin to associate the experience with something pleasant.

* Teach your dog that rain is OK. When it rains, don't complain. Instead, go outside and show your dog that you are having a great time. Stand in the rain, take a walk with an umbrella, or sit on the porch while the rain hits the shed.
