How to make friends of cats in the same apartment

It happens that after adopting one cat, you then want another one. However, if you don’t carry out a good process of adaptation when introducing the cats, it can be very difficult to help a cat accept another one that has just arrived. Here are some tips how to make them friends in the same house.

1. Give each cat their own space. Each animal should have its own place in the house. The cat will feel comfortable and safe there. Usually these are separate beds, play spaces and feeders.

2. Introduce animals to each other gradually. First, cats can be allowed to smell the toy or thing of another cat. Once the animals have become accustomed to each other's scent, controlled encounters can be started, such as through a doorway or a net.

3. Give them positive associations. Associate cat encounters with something pleasant. For example, reward them with treats or toys during communication. Positive experiences will help them perceive each other with pleasant emotions.

4. Try to understand animal’s body language. Pay close attention to cats behave. Signs of tension, aggression or stress can show that they are not yet ready for complete freedom and interaction. In this case, it is worth postponing communication and waiting for the animals to be ready.

5. Common games and activities. To strengthen communication between animals, common games and activities help well. Playing with moving toys or interactive games can help them connect and distribute energy.

6. Be patient. Remember that every adaptation process is individual, so the time it takes depends on the nature and previous experience of cats. Be patient and give the animals time to adjust and establish their relationship.

It is important to remember that not all cats can become true friends, but living together in peace and tranquility is possible. In case cats continue to show aggression or stress towards each other, it is recommended to contact a veterinarian or a behavioral trainer. The specialist will make individual recommendations based on his observations.
