Can dogs watch TV?

Do you know that in Germany there is a special TV channel for our four-legged friends? This channel is called DogTV, it's not about dogs, it's for dogs. The purpose of this channel is to alleviate the boredom that pets can feel when they are left at home alone.

So there is a reasonable question, if the dogs can see and understand what is shown on the screen?

Scientists have no answer to this question. The vision of dogs and cats is different from ours. Dogs’ eyes are more precise and sharper, and they notice movement better than humans. Therefore, dogs perceive the picture on the TV screen a little differently.

The TV screen plays images one after the other at a very high speed. Speed deceives our vision and gives the impression that we see movement. Humans perceive this movement at an image frequency of 40 Hz. Dogs need for perception a speed of at least 70-75 Hz. Therefore, on old antenna TVs, where the frame rate reached a maximum of 60 Hz, so our four-legged friends could only watch a blinking picture. In modern models, the frame rate is much faster - about 300 Hz, on such screens, dogs are able to see the action.

Another important reason that influences whether dogs can watch television is the height at which it is placed. Normally, televisions are placed so that they are at eye level when we are sitting. For your pet, this is high, and it is terribly inconvenient for him to look up at the image. If you've ever sat in the front row at the cinema, you know what we are talking about.

Our pets are not interested in programs that are not designed for them. People on the TV screen does not attract their attention. Many owners have noticed that pets pay attention when they see other animals on the screen, but do not react to static or cartoon images of cats or dogs. They are able to understand the difference.

Experts believe that our pets are especially interested in those programs in which they can watch other moving animals. For example, seeing cats, birds, sheep and especially other dogs.
